Time for Humor (and hillbilly music)

An oldie but a goodie that Mrs. AOW has on a 78 rpm platter:

Back in 1987, I bought Mrs. AOW an RCA Victrola - the real deal. It looks a lot like this one:

From time to time, Mrs. AOW winds up the Victrola and plays several of the 78's that she has in her collection. Here's a song that she likes to play because she inherited the 78 from her mother:

You go, Mr. AOW. Jimmie Rodgers, for the win.

Duck,
I thought that you'd appreciate that song by Jimmie Rodgers. In fact, I told Mr. AOW just that! You and I have common ground in certain music genres. I come honestly by my love of hillbilly music as my mother's family hails from the hills of East Tennessee.

Mr. AOW, who grew up in Southern California with parents from upstate New York and Illinois, had never heard of Jimmie Rodgers until I cranked up that Victrola and played the 78 that Mom had.

When I heard the soundtrack from O Brother, Where Art Thou?, particularly "In the Jailhouse Now," I remembered that Mom had mentioned the Jimmie Rodgers version of that song, too. I don't have the 78 of that one, however.

My Dad had a few 78's. One of the tunes was called "Smack her down again paw". Hmmmm. It never made me violent against women. I've in fact, never hit a woman.
Nor did my Dad.

PS - It's easy to see how Hank Williams Sr built upon that sort of bass line and rythm. Mostly improved as well.

Finally, we had the Beatles, and now have devolved into rap and the likes of black eyed peas.

I hope to live long enough to see real music make it's way back to the popular culture.

There is just something so great about 1920's music! There is a low powered local station here that plays such fare.

Thanks for posting Mr.AOW. I got the biggest kick out of Andy Griffith telling that football story!
