it's truly a whole other atmosphere when you arrive on this second floor. Also, interestingly enough, the residents on this floor seem to be in a 'better' mood than the ones [on the floor] below!!
Another way they could brighten up these places would be to sponsor ART INSTRUCTION for the RESIDENTS who are well enough to enjoy some purposeful activity.
Paintings, drawings -- even figures made of modeling clay -- put on display in the halls -- and constantly changing as new works of art are created could be very stimulating and do a lot to boost morale.
Artists in the nearby community could lend their works to help make the every changing exhibit that much more interesting.
I'm just back from Europe in my hometown they just opened a new hospital. Unlike others it is equipped with a kennel so that patients who have nobody to care for their pet can bring them along during their stay at the hospital. Of course they charge you for it, still it's a good move.

Hey! That is a GREAT idea. It takes a lot of that feel of being trapped in an "institution" out of the atmosphere, doesn't it?

Five weeks? Yikes! I spent one day short of two weeks in a hospital recently and I thought that was unbearable enough.
Murals break the monotony of such institutions... so would a volunteer bringing by dogs or cats to visit. I would've looked forward to that.
There's a restaurant near our house that did this. It is kinda nice.
