This Weekend

I haven't been thinking much about blogging lately because I'm getting ready to go to another coin show.  I always study up for weeks in advance, and that's what I've been doing lately.

I have pages of notes for this trip to the coin show.

I've been doing a lot of research because a couple of my friends have bankrolled me to make some buys for them.  As a former coin dealer, I still can get the dealer's discount when I make purchases at these coin shows.  Plus, and I hate to say it, a man with a mobility device gets treated more fairly by the dealers.

Maybe I can make some good buys for myself too!  But right now, the bid/ask for precious metals is low, so lots of dealers are in too deep and won't sell at the new lower prices.

The paratransit van will pick me up before the sun rises, and I'll stay at the coin show all day long.  For almost 3 years after my stroke, Mrs. AOW had to go to the coin show with me because of bathrooming issues.  Now I can manage on my own!  Except that I fall in the john once in a while.  The guys at the coin show come to pick me up when I do fall; I call them from my cell phone, which I always wear in a special pouch around my neck

Wish me luck so that I can make some good buys - for my friends and for myself.  Now is a good time to invest!

Do you specialize, Mr. AOW.

Just coins or do you collect currency also?

Good Luck AOW. On all counts. Do you think it's a good time to buy silver coins in poor condition just for the silver value? Silver may be on the verge of a comeback. Maybe :)

I've always been attracted to coin collecting though never got into it seriously.
When I worked at McDonalds when I was 15, I was working the counter with a buddy and he broke open a new roll of pennies. Within was a penny hald stuck on one blank and half struck on another. It was 1965. I bought one for a penny for the McD manager and he bought the other. We should have flipped or something and one of us kept both halves. I wonder what something like that might be worth. I don't even have the other half anymore. Sold it for LSD in the 1970's don't ya know.

Kid,
My knowledge about coins and precious metals is so small as to fit into a thimble!

But Mr. AOW is so knowledgeable that he nodded or shook his head when I read your comment to him.

I'm not sure, but I think that Mr. AOW prefers to invest in silver that has numismatic value as well as inherent precious-metal value.

Duck,
Mr. AOW rarely invests in paper currency. To easy to be ruined: water damage, fire, etc.

Mrs AOW, Thx :)

Again, good luck for a good day.

I sure wish I still had my coin collection.

Kid,
Blank pennies are worth about $3 today. Off-center strikes are worth more.

Odie and Thersites,
I found what I wanted for one of the fellows that sent me to buy. But I didn't find what the other fellow wanted; 2012 proof sets were not to be found.

To commenters:
I typed in the those last two entries for Mr. AOW while he dictated them to me. His iPad is on charge this morning. Figures! Just when he wants to use the device, it needs charging.
